I really like this signing decision by the young star, not only because I study at Mizzou (obviously), but because it shows tremendous self-confidence in his own ability. He could have easily taken the easier road and gone to a better overall team with more supportive talent around him, but this signing shows he wants and will demand the ball all the time. He is going to be the best player on the team as soon as he steps on the field, and I love the swagger he has to be the go-to-guy right away. He has a tall order ahead of him, however, as Mizzou will have a tough schedule next season--taking on powerhouses Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.
Moving onto DGB the player, I believe his athleticism and skill set are most comparable to that of Detroit star receiver, Calvin Johnson ("Megatron"). Tall, fast, and extremely physical--they are both the type of player where a QB could just lob the ball in their general vicinity and have confidence they will raise up and snatch it every time. These types of plays will be key to Mizzou's success with DGB, considering they do not have the most pass-savvy or accurate QB (unless Franklin vastly improved in the offseason). His ability, along with fellow receiver T.J. Moe, to catch mid-range passes will be crucial to opening up the part of the field where DGB truly shines--deep, down-field passes. No matter what happens, it is obvious that DGB will have a great career where-ever he decided to go to school, but I'm more than ecstatic to have him in a Missouri Tiger uniform.

An incredible signing. Pinkel is one hell of a motivator to get such a player of the caliber of DGB to buy into the unknown of Mizzou going to the SEC. Bright future there in Columbia.

Let's see...every starting MU QB in the last 10 years is playing on Sundays...and James Franklin as a true Sophomore had a better Soph year than any of them...but he's low prestige and talent. Dude what are you smokin?

ReplyDeleteActually Blaine Gabbert threw for almost 1,000 more yards and had both more touchdowns and fewer interceptions in his sophomore year at Mizzou. I didn't say Franklin wasn't a good player, he merely is not the best pure passer out of DGB's final choices. He is no where near the throwing ability of two first team all conference players in Landry Jones (Oklahoma) and Tyler Wilson (Arkansas). Franklin has tremendous upside and just needs to improve his passing game to compliment his running game. The presence of DGB, however, should ease some of the accuracy pressure on Franklin because of his size, speed, and catch radius.

ReplyDeleteFirst off, I want to say I am glad this day is finally here. Now that it is, all I can say is, "Wow!". I've been following DGB's recruitment very closely ever since he put Mizzou on his list of schools. I knew immediately how much of an impact a player like this could have on the program for years to come. There were times where I honestly didn't think he was going to sign with Mizzou. Arkansas certainly made a great case for him football wise; education wise, we certainly had the edge. I think that was a main factor in this decision. My ears perked up right away when he said, "...continuing my education at" Missouri. A lot of recruits tend to say, "I'll be playing for..." or "taking my talents to...". DGB, however, made clear his desire to learn. To be a student. That's one of my favorite things about this guy. If he has a desire to learn off the field, then there will be a direct correlation to his ability to learn and improve on the field. Additionally, I don't see DGB getting in a lot of, if any, trouble while in Columbia...something I couldn't say for some Missouri athletes of the past. Lastly, let's not downplay the significance of signing a guy like DGB in our first year in the SEC. I never in a million years could've predicted us moving to the SEC the same year DGB suits up for us the first time. That is going to bring a lot of attention to the program, and University in general. Not to mention we host the defending National Champions in Columbia on October 13th. With an already phenomenal(and perhaps improved) duel-threat James Franklin, healthy defense, healthy Josey and now DGB, there's a chance(if even small) that we can upset the champs. How huge would that be? This team now has legitimate threats at all our offensive positions, and our defense will hopefully not be plagued by injures and be able to play up to their true ability. There seem to be big things on the horizon for the Missouri Tigers football program, and I couldn't be happier! Now I can go back to focusing on our already elite basketball team!

the main factor in his signing with Mizzou is that now it's a selling point to other top in state recruits and to those in other states who might want to attend Mizzou.
ReplyDeleteI guess if the #1 recruits thinks Mizzou has something to offer, maybe I should seriously consider them also!
